Health Information Technology (Cert.)
The HIT Certificate is an AHIMA-approved coding program. The Health Information Technology
(HIT) Medical Coding certificate is designed for individuals who are interested in
working in the field of medical coding. Instruction includes courses in medical terminology,
introduction to health information technology, CPT coding, ICD coding, computer software
applications in healthcare, reimbursement methodologies, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology,
and pharmacology. During the final semester, students participate in a medical coding
internship program. They intern in hospitals, physicians' offices, ambulatory care
centers, and other healthcare facilities. Successful completion of the certificate
prepares students to sit for the entry-level national coding certification exam CCA
(Certified Coding Associate) and provides the educational coursework required for
the mastery coding certification exams CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) and CCS-P
(Certified Coding Specialist-Physician based).
The Comprehensive Coding Program is approved by the AHIMA Professional Certificate Approval Program (PCAP). This designation acknowledges the coding program as having been evaluated by a peer review process using a national minimum set of standards for entry-level coding professionals. This process allows academic institutions to be acknowledged as offering an AHIMA Approved Coding Certificate Program.
